Selfie camera with no ads: what “free” should actually mean

“Free” has become the most abused word in camera apps. In the last twelve months, ads were the single most common complaint in one- and two-star reviews of the leading beauty and enhancement apps: 180 of 636, with lines like “an ad as soon as it opens, an ad to do anything, an ad to save.” Some apps also ration the free features: watch an ad for one more save, one more enhancement.

A fair definition of free: the core features work with no limits and no interruptions, saving is never behind an ad or a payment, and whatever is free is stated in writing so it can’t quietly become paid.
